Thursday, May 13, 2010 at 2:07PM You've decided to sponsor a child. You've studied that precious face, looked for personality clues in the choice of clothing or color of shoes. Perhaps you examined the background for hints of the reality this child faces every day.
You may feel like you have a connection already. Or you may be like me, drawn in by that sweet smile, but honestly wondering how to start this. You want to know more than what the biography says or what this picture shows, but where do you begin?
And what do you write?
I’m a new sponsor, and I’m asking those same questions. I just started sponsoring two girls, one in Bangladesh and one in Cambodia. They look very sweet, but very different.
In the interest of full disclosure, I should mention that I work at Mission of Mercy. In fact, I often write or edit the materials that you receive when you first decide to sponsor. I write bios and descriptions of the child’s country. I write articles and stories about what we do. And letters. I write a lot of letters.
The funny thing? I have no idea how to start these letters. And I work here.
So my goal in starting this blog is to create a place where we can encourage each other as sponsors to stay involved. I’d like some accountability to write more often. And I’d love to learn about what keeps you motivated.
Along the way I hope to share some of the great ideas I’ve gleaned from reading sponsor and child letters. I promise to write about this journey. You can trust that I’ll be honest… and a little sarcastic.
So what do you say? Care to join me?

I hope someone will respond to this blog. The reason why? because I feel the same as this person. I just now went to this Mission of Mercy site (after setting up my account several months ago) for only the second time and really looked around this time. I did come across one blog that helped me to get an idea what to write. But I'm sure both the writer of this blog and my self could use a few more suggestions.
Ginger, we hope you've found more suggestions and encouragement as you explore the blog. Several posts on letter writing can be found in A Sponsor's Journal under Letters. Any post marked as Tip Tuesday will also have suggestions. Do leave us a comment if you have more questions; we'd be happy to answer them.
I just signed up to sponsor a little five year old girl in Cambodia. I have read everything I can find about what we can send to our child. I know it must fit into a #10 envelope. I have a little doll that is small and not over an inch thick that I plan on sending. I also want to send her some wrist bands that don't contain any metal. They are colorful and have Christian sayings and crosses on them. She attends a Christian school. I also cut out some paper dolls for her. Are these things that we are allowed to send? I would love some specifics on what others have sent along with their letters.
Hi Jan. What you listed is fine to send -- your sponsored child will be thrilled to receive something from you! Don't forget to send pictures, too. When we travel to the projects, many children show us the photos their sponsor has sent and then ask us if we know their sponsor! Maps are also very popular because many children do not have access to them or aren't allowed to take their books home from school.
There are several posts about what others have included in their letters on the blog. Keep exploring! With the upcoming holidays, you'll have many opportunities to send fun things. But remember, your positive, encouraging WORDS are much more valuable than anything that fits into an envelope!
