Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at 6:23PM Sometimes, all it takes is a headline and my mind is racing to the worst possible thing. To be sure, the evening news is full of terrible tragedies from all over the world. We've had no shortage of them this year, starting with the earthquake in Haiti, to the continued famine in Kenya.
It could be as huge as a cyclone or as small as a typical illness -- but because our sponsored children live in tremendous poverty, they always seem to be at risk. So if something happens, how do you know that your sponsored child is all right?
The short answer? If we don't call you.
If you don't hear from us, it is quite likely that your sponsored child is okay. But here is the process we use to acquire that information and pass it on to you.
There are two basic scenarios that apply -- a disaster like a flood, or an accident or sickness that strikes without warning. Either way, in addition to keeping an eye on the news, we rely on our staff to contact us as soon as possible.
Obviously, if this is a natural disaster, it may be difficult to maintain communications. But our staff at headquarters and on the field is savvy and use multiple means to make contact. They are quick to let us know what areas are affected, approximately how many children live there, and the type of needs they anticipate. And then they go out and work with the project directors to gather more information.
If a child falls ill, we are notified as quickly as possible. Because the areas in which our projects work are often rural (and without fail impoverished) this can also take time. You can't call or email a child's parents. Thankfully, our project staff are dedicated and deeply involved in the community.
Once our office in Colorado Springs is notified, we get to work contacting you, the sponsor, with whatever information we have. At times that might not be much, but we want to make you aware if your child is affected in any way so you can begin praying. You may also have a chance to help us rebuild a home or secure medical treatment depending on the situation.
That's also where the Children's Crisis Fund comes in -- we are able to step in and help as quickly as possible. This year we have used the Children's Crisis Fund to rebuild homes after a cyclone or flood, to help families back on their feet after a major medical crisis, and to provide hearing aids to several children whose futures were at risk if they could not continue their education.
When we hear of the crisis, it's important not to panic. Mission of Mercy, with your help and the assistance of the Children's Crisis Fund, is the safety net that most children in the developing world don't have. (You can donate to the Children's Crisis Fund here.)
Again, if your child is affected by any situation, we will contact you as soon as possible. Because we know how much you care, and we know how effective prayer can be. In the meantime, we appreciate your continued prayers and support for all of our children. Never doubt that you're making a difference.
