Tip Tuesday: Other Ways To Get Involved

Many of my Tip Tuesday posts focus on sponsorship and how you can best encourage your sponsored child.

But what if you’re not a sponsor?

What if  the $34 a month to support a child is beyond your budget? Or maybe you appreciate the benefits sponsorship provides but don’t know if you want to take on the commitment to ministering to a specific child?

You might want to consider supporting the New Life Home.

The New Life Home in Nairobi, Kenya, rescues abandoned babies and nurses them back to health so they can reach their God-given potential. These children aren’t available for sponsorship, but you can help support the care these babies need to have a better chance at life.

Any amount can help. Currently, there are more than 50 babies in the Nairobi home. Imagine how many diapers they go through in a day. Or bottles of formula. Or jars of food.

The New Life Home has a phenomenal team of volunteers who come in on a regular basis (several days a week, in twelve-hour shifts) to do the laundry (by hand, because the sheer amount would overwhelm a washing machine), feed the babies, and help with everyday tasks.

Did you know you could volunteer, too? Each year Mission of Mercy takes mission teams to Kenya, and each year the team stops at the New Life Home. You can watch this page for more information on our mission trips.

But one of the most crucial ways you can get involved is by praying. The babies rescued by the New Life Home have serious medical conditions (tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, severe malnutrition, pneumonia) and sometimes major surgeries are needed. That list alone warrants prayer, as the New Life Home often relies on the Lord to provide the surgeries and treatments at minimal charge.

And yet there's more that needs to be brought to the Lord:

  • The children may have suffered emotional trauma in their abandonment. Love and patience are required in abundance.
  • Caring for children with such acute needs means heartache is inevitable. Some children do not survive, and this impacts the hearts of the staff at New Life Home.
  • The staff must work with the authorities who find the babies, and that can mean a lot of red tape.
  • Many of the children are available for adoption, but forever families must step up.

While Mission of Mercy mostly focuses on impacting a child's life through sponsorship, you can also change a life with your gifts, time, and prayers. Every little bit helps.
