The Fruit Of Unrest; Floods In Sri Lanka

We at Mission of Mercy are praying for the country of Jordan, where protests have also resulted in continued reshuffling of the government. Jordan’s king has vowed to push ahead with reforms which could start to address the poverty that is so prevalent there.

As we pray for all the believers who continue to minister to God’s people in this region, we are also lifting up the country of Sri Lanka. While it did not make many news headlines, more than a million people have been affected by severe flooding in Sri Lanka.

Because of unusually heavy monsoon rains, the central and eastern districts have been especially hard hit. These areas produce much of Sri Lanka’s main staple of rice. Some estimate the floods have destroyed over a third of the projected harvest and drive up food prices.

Our staff there sent the following prayer requests:

  • Pray that the Lord's mighty hands would be upon this area and that He would cause the weather conditions to change and bring relief to the beleaguered people. It has been unseasonably cold there, and children are especially vulnerable to this extreme weather.
  • Pray for protection for the people. Many of those who lost homes are now living exposed to the elements or in crowded shelters, sharing space with hundreds of other families.
  • Finding food and clear drinking water is a major problem. Pray that the Lord would provide for the needs of the people, especially as food prices rise.
  • Pray for the people who have lost all their crops and are now without their major income source for the year.
  • Pray for the people who are helping the flood victims, that the Lord will give them strength to keep going forward and bring aid. Pray for the Lord to miraculously provide a way for the people who are trying to help the flood victims who are inaccessible due to flooded or damaged roads.

As always, if your sponsored child is directly affected, we will contact you as soon as possible.

Thank you for being faithful prayer warriors for your sponsored children and God’s work in the world!
