When Rijul began attending one of Mission of Mercy’s programs near Kathmandu, Nepal, 10 years ago, the staff immediately recognized that the sad little boy was ill. Rijul had stomach problems that kept him from digesting his food properly, often leaving him hungry and weak.

His parents had to choose between his treatment and education. Their situation drew the attention of the Mission of Mercy project. “His parents were not able to afford enough many for his education because of his sickness,” shares Bikash, a project worker. “They lost lots of money in treatment.”

Those treatments had not improved Rijul’s health, so the project staff arranged for medical screenings and more nutritious food for Rijul.

Then they did something that changed everything: they prayed over him. It was a healing prayer – and although he knew little about the Jesus who healed him, little Rijul was happy to feel better.

Now with more energy and able to play, Rijul needed to learn how to interact with other children at the project. The staff stayed with him, encouraging him and helping him catch up in school. 

Slowly Rijul learned about the source of his healing. Christ became his Savior. The Bible became more than a religious book to him, and he began to participate in prayer and worship. And there Rijul discovered a God-given talent: singing and playing guitar.

Today Rijul can be found in the front, leading worship and offering his talents back to God. “He did not laugh and smile before,” writes Bikash, “now he is laughing boy and makes laugh, too.”*

“Yes, I have changed,” says Rijul. “The project shows love towards me. They encourage me when I was sad. They helped me at my homework, they prayed me at my needs and sickness.”

Rijul was also encouraged by his sponsor, whom he considers family members. “I like their caring nature, prayers, their love and encouraging words which helps me to be strong.”

He also has dreams for his future. “Now I can glorify God with my talent by playing guitar and by singing worship songs. I like to be a worship leader. Through this I can glorify the Lord. I feel I have a more hopeful future. I am well built up.”
