Dispatch Haiti: Cholera And The Perfect Storm

Jack Eans, our Vice President for International Child Ministries, is back on the ground in Haiti, helping to evaluate the situation at our projects. He sends us this report, which gives us all the more reason to pray.

Doesn't take long in Haiti to realize they are facing a deadly combination of factors:

  • ignorance (even educated people here have never seen cholera),
  • unbelief (they've been using the same water and methods forever -- why change),
  • superstition (much like how AIDS is viewed in Africa),
  • extreme poverty (a disease that touches the very basics of life when all they know is survival),
  • and a political scene (where candidates spend time and money on spreading their name with
speakers and placards, but not one warning sign posted nor school talking about it).

The good news: the church actually is in a position to lead the way.
And what Mission of Mercy is doing is way beyond what others are engaged in. We
have tutors providing warnings to children as they teach them the
dos and don'ts, pastors making sure families understand the urgency
and 2 cholera intervention personnel per project being trained on the
all important home visits to ensure things take root.

Still it's an extremely complex situation that needs lots of prayer.
Most people simply have no other water than what they get from a
river. Many have no toilet facilities and go in the same water they
use to survive. And ensuring they put bleach in all their daily water no
matter the purpose will be no easy task.

We are watching the beginnings of all this as mothers and
children gather together at all projects to learn the steps of
prevention. With few others in front with us in this regions, it's easy to be
accused of crying wolf, but we're declaring war and shouting it out loud because
losing even one child would be too many.

Thank you for your continued prayers. Click the link below if you would like to help us cover the cost of meeting the need in Haiti.
